eight eight, updeight!

Hi everyone, poyoy here! I want to use this blog a lot more. I noticed that the last post was last year - crazy! I hope you're all doing well.

It has become a bit of a habit to mention how busy I've been, but that certainly has been true for this year! Without going into too much of the boring details, I'm hoping to return to art more seriously as I focus more on getting back into proper health. Please remember to take care and not overwork yourselves!

I participated in Artfight this year and had a lot of fun, despite not being very active during the month. I was surprised to even receive some epic artwork of my characters! I'm going to showcase it on my toyhouse thread.

How do you guys like the new font? It's pretty cool; I hope it shows on the blog!

What have I been up to?

Lots of work, lots of studying.

I am trying to relax now.

What games do you guys recommend? I've been trying to play the switch, but there aren't many games I'm too fond of.

I really need to get to work on stuff that makes me happy and I enjoy.

I've been trying to make it a habit to post more on Instagram, but I would like to post updates more thoughtfully here as well.

Maybe I'll do a pokemon playthrough!

My favorites would be the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, and Pokemon Platinum. These games have a special place in my heart!

...Alright, maybe I should definitely give it a go.

09/24/2023 friend reference process

This is my original character, Friend! He is part of the creative universe dubbed PHANTASIA. hope you like this reference, I really enjoyed working on this. He has two forms, his older form and younger self. He is commonly seen with robes of humble means, typically robed/hooded garments. His eyes are usually closed. The orange markings are at his eyelids and nose. Thank you for viewing!

MS Paint preliminary sketch

Drawn mostly in mouse, I wanted to just get the basic info down and then move to clip studio paint, where I took the original sketch and added a new layer on top, made a basic line art layer, then a flat layer of color under that, then merged it all together and began working on the painting/rendering on one layer. I wanted to explore a variety of expressions and outfits, as well as have his alternate/young form in the reference. I'm very pleased with this composition.

finished result.

I'll try to post some video of the speed paint later.

some miscellaneous character design notes:

- his clothing is always humble, like peasant garments, robes, cloaks, rough textiles and layers

- his eyes are always portrayed as closed

- he has orange markings in his eyelid area and on his nose, nowhere else; these are not makeup

I plan on posting more information on these characters in the future on my website.

09/12/2023 pokefusion drawings

Hello everyone, it's been a while since my last post. I'm going to try to make more of an effort to post here.

My last discussion was about Ken Sugimori's art style, and how I wanted to improve from my last attempt at a Pokémon spin-off drawing. I dissected the style a bit and critiqued what I struggled with in my own interpretation of the style.

Can you see what two Pokémon I used?

 ...

It's Pignite and Murkrow!

I'm really proud of the way I tried to emulate the style a little stricter. I noticed the shading efforts were not complicated at all, so I decided to simplify the color palette to a simple tint and shade above and beneath the main hues. I noticed the painterly smears used to highlight some areas of shadow and light, so I tried to replicate that in my own work, but I feel as though my iconic poyoy-rigidness has shown through in this regard. I really am proud of the delicate linework.

I'm pretty sad that the timelapse for this didn't save. I was really excited to rewatch the progress of this drawing.

What do you think of this drawing? I've been really having a lot of fun trying to make Pokémon fusions. If you follow me on Instagram, you may see me take requests to do that from time to time. I also occasionally pop up on some Toyhouse threads to participate in some of the fun forum art games to give art. Take a look at my thread if you're interested! You're always welcome to stop by and say hi, ask questions.

Since you made it to the end, here is a WIP doodle I made of my next fusion. Can you guess what it is?

Hope everyone is having a good one.
Thanks for reading!

speedpaint reflection: noivern owl fusion

speedpaint reflection: OC 01 CSP timelapse

poyoy pondering the stylistic elements of pokemon art.

For your convenience, I have embedded my first ever youtube video for you to take a look at. I hope you guys appreciate the insight to the drawing in this method.

This was my first youtube video - I didn't really know what I was doing, and I honestly still don't know. I use a simple recording software and then speed up the painting process by the fastest amount possible, because I have a tendency to spend a lot of time on my drawings, and I don't think that it will make for a very fun speedpaint if I have it stretched out for all of my lull moments.

The assignment for this drawing was a Pokémon fusion - Pokémon put together. In this case, it was a Noivern and a barn owl. I almost mistook it for a Pokémon fusion but it was actually just a unique request prompt to mix a Noivern and barn owl together. You can see when I brought the official art for Noivern onto the canvas because I had no idea what I wanted to do. I then fiddled with ideas trying to incorporate the dragon elements of the noivern onto the character, I really wanted to maintain a major owl element to the character.

I wanted to emulate that pokemon style, but it was really difficult. The official artist for the official style that I was emulating is Ken Sugimori - I really wanted to copy that clean cel shaded style that we see in official Pokemon art.

I was struggling to maintain that line stroke confidence and ended up faltering stylistically - completely - I ended up resigning to that I was not able to emulate this style, and that I would need more practice. Taking a look at this speed paint again, I've come to appreciate Sugimori's style more- and I feel more inclined to study it further to appreciate that bubbly, lively, colorful and clean element in his work.

This is an older style of his that is a lot more traditional leaning - I feel like this can be emulated with copic markers or watercolors if desired, a very cute style that relies on both the chibi look of the characters and the bright colors to really come together. That gradient shift that you see in a lot of Ken Sugimori's work gives it this fresh airbrushed feeling, not sure how else to describe this element but it wasn't exactly what I'm talking about -- I was looking more at Sugimori's other official pokemon artwork.  Simpler, more graphic/cartoon? I'm not sure how to describe it other than cleaner lines and color?

Take a look here -- I was really focused on the simple shading of Sugimori's work. There is the main hue, the shade, and then the tint of that hue. Simple color palette to work from - but I still managed to botch it up... I just really need to try again!

I want to have a go at this challenge one more time. I really enjoyed trying to design something off of an already existing design + animal and then trying to incorporate a style with it.

Hope everyone has been doing well.
